Twitter is ablaze with users lamenting the 280 character change. Here is my message to anyone working on a similar social network - the time to strike is now. If Twitter continues down this path, it will shortly be a network of white supremacists, trolls, Nazis and the President all shouting at each other about the correct way to display a confederate flag on ones truck. It's only a matter of time before we can (ugh) edit tweets, erasing accountability of our words in the process. Instead of solving real issues affecting its user base, Twitter tasked its development team with expanding character limit. It's a confusing pivot for Twitter, after a continued inability to curb harassment. The real-time value of Twitter cannot properly be expressed even in 280 characters. There isn't an internet where that would happen.įacebook and Twitter have discernible differences. I hate to be the one to break it to you Jack, but Twitter is never going to become Facebook. Giving users this kind of expansion to their often horrible and fractured thoughts would create an even more difficult case for profitability.
It would heighten problems you are yet to solve. This is not a real problem, as you so state. Listen, Jack, I know you want to do better by your users. The point of Twitter was to force people to be concise in their humor so we'd know who's actually funny Internet comedians will become thirstier. Interactions will become random and disjointed. If you follow more than 100 people, your timeline will become insufferable. This latest move just turns all your terrible tweets into bad Medium posts. Expanding the character limit for links and pictures was smart, that enhanced the experience.
It's where we prove our mettle as the masters of the 140 character joke. Twitter is where we go to escape life while also sharing information about it.
